Gritty, DIY, and genre-bending: meet SoCal’s post-punkish trio Not Invited. In a world of corporate-backed pop homogeneity, industry plants and social media stardom, Not Invited evokes a simpler time in music, one where an appreciation for the craftmanship of sound prevailed over all. Based in Vista, California and playing shows all over San Diego County, the group posesses a homegrown and relatable quality that’s hard to find in much of today’s mainstream- even, and especially in punk spaces.
Perhaps one of Not Invited’s most captivating characteristics is that each member plays each instrument. Luke Cottrell, Marc Montez, and Julian Bistowski take turns on drums, bass, and guitar, switching positions several times throughout their set. All three members sing, whether together or separately, creating a one-of-a-kind dynamic listening experience. Montez’s low, gravelly vocals are reminiscent of a Jonathan Richman-gone-hardcore. Cottrell and Bistowski’s emotional screams perfectly balance with their electrifying, psychedelic riffs. Cottrell ingeniously employs a butter knife to create distorted, dancing guitar lines that introduce a surfy timbre to the band’s overall sound. Bistowski drums with powerful conviction, yet also an ease that translates into the band’s overall punk ethos. Each member excels in their instruments and brings a distinctive personality that sets Not Invited apart from your typical local scene.

While defying genre conventions has become more popular in recent years, Not Invited does so thoughtfully and with flair. They have skillfully created a not quite garage rock, not quite surf rock, not quite hardcore- yet, compelling blend that feels at once a classic and reminiscent but future-facing sound. Think: The Clash meets CAN for beers on the beach.
If you’ve been looking for a new local band to get excited about, want to dance with friends to great live music, or just want bragging rights about being ahead of the bandwagon- head out to one of Not Invited’s upcoming SoCal gigs while they’re still small. You won’t regret it.
